UNIQUE DISTINCTION
MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP WON BY MOTHER AND SON By winning a Royal College of Music exhibition, Mr. Allen Wellbrock, of Christchurch, has duplicated the success achieved 23 years ago by his mother, who was formerly Miss Dorothy Browning. There is no previous record in New Zealand of a mother and son having won exhibitions and, according to Mr. Cachemaille, resident secretary in New Zealand for the Associated Board, the event is probably unprecedented in the British Dominions. Mr. Allen Wellbrock, whose exhibition entitles him to two years' tuition at the Royal College? of Music, will leave for London toward the end of this year. Mr. Wellbrock is a double L.A.8., having obtained his diploma for the organ in 1930, at the age of 16 years, and for the piano in 1932, and it is for the latter performance that the exhibition has been awarded. While still a pupil of St. Andrew's College, Christchurch, he was appointed organist and choirmaster of Durham Street Methodist Church, which position lie at present holds. He was born in Invercargill in 1914.
