NEEDS OF KAWAKAWA

NEW LINK WITH RUSSELL HELP WITH ROAD SOUGHT [by telegraph— special reporter") RUSSELL. Friday A request that a short section of road bo made to complete the connection between Kawakawa and Russell was among a number of matters submitted to the Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, when he visited Kawakawa yesterday. It was stated that less than three miles of road formation and metalling were required to complete the Waikare Road, which would give Kawakawa. connection with the new Wha-ngarei-Russell Road. This would reduce the distance from Kawakawa to Russell from 72 miles to 28 miles, and tho Minister was asked to help. . The road also give access to a number of settlers and open an area of land bought from natives by theCrown. The work would be suitable as relief work. It was admitted that the first part of tho road was in steep country. Tho Minister said he would ask the Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. liitchener, to get a report on the proposition. Another request was for the metallingof 25 chains of Stewart's Road. Some of the settlers had no access and if tho work, which was estimated to cost £'6o, was not done soon, tho settlors would not be able to get out this winter. Mr. Ransom thought this was work that could be done by the Public Works Department out of the outlying distucts fund, and promised to inquire.
