INTERESTING STICK
z: c POSSIBLE MAORI RELIC More than ordinary interest attaches To a common-looking piece of manuka *** in the possession of Mr. W. D. Meiklejohn, of Devonport, which waa recently recovered from beneath 85 J feet of scoria. The stick, which is 14 ..,-,jnches in diameter by 18 inches long, ali its bark complete upon it, and v the thick end is smoothly sliced off _ i( at an angle as though cut by some jiuman agency. " It was lying in blue mud when Mr. 'Meiklejohn and others had dug a well through 35 feet of Undisturbed scoria at the top of Church Street, Devonport. Beside it were little twigs of manuka with all their leaves preserved .upon them. The cut-off end of the *"• stick suggests the work of primitive Maoris, but the problem remains as 7. ,tp how the stick came to be placed pt such a depth bcflow the surface. * Mr. Meiklejohn also has a fine heavy :i specimen of Maori grindstone with six "faces upon it. This was recovered Bear North Head.
