PAINFUL SWALLOW
BT A PHTSICIAX Sore throats are common in autumn* for tho different varieties of tonsilitis are largely to blame. Any acute infection of the tonsils makes the patient feel very ill. He develops a high temperature, suffers severe headache, feels shivery one minute and too hot the next, and complains of " pains all over." Swallowing is painful, and the glands in the neck are often enlarged. Send the patient to bed at once and begin treatment with a good dose of salts. Hot flannels should be applied to the neck. Apart from the difficulty in swallowing, the diet should be light. BeatenU P eggs, milk, plenty of fruit juice and as much water as the patient feels capable of drinking, are most important. A gargle of glycerine of thymol is useful, but this is not advisible if there is more pain while caroling, as it only increases the inflammation.
