WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
Mareretu. —The monthly meeting was held at Mrs. Gorrie's residence and was well attended. Community singing and items by members were enjoyed. The clay's competition was ginger biscuits. Paengaroa discussed and voted upon remits. A report of the official opening of the rest home at The Mount was given. The roll call was written recipes for invalid dishes. Mrs. Saunders demonstrated button-hole making. The bring and buy table was a special success. Swanson held a very successful party in Mrs. T. Freeman's beautiful grounds. Mrs. Stanley Phillips opened the function, which, with games, competitions and tea served by the members, was very enjoyable. Taupiri.—A tea-cosy competition brought forward many very pretty exhibits. Mrs. G. Clarke, of Komakorau, gave a demonstration in cane basketmaking. Taurikura celebrated its first birthday with at At Home. The large attendance of local ladies was augmented by visitors from Whangarei and Parua Bay. An enjoyable programme was presented. The president received a gift from the members, also from tho Whangarei centre. Waihi made arrangements for a garden party in aid of the local band. "Hidden Countries" was the c6mpetition, and musical items were rendered. Whakapirau had an interesting antique and curio display, many of the articles being over 200 years old. A beautiful Paisley shawl, and a Chinese carving on ivory were much admired. Mrs. Jenkins, of Marohemo, gave an amusing talk on her various trips to some of the most favoured North Island tourist resorts. The resignation ot the president, Mrs. Jackman, owing to ill-health, was received with regrot. Mrs. Cawte was elected to take her place.
