NAVAL BASE POSITION
SURGEON APPOINTED The appointment of Dr. J. Garfield Stewart, of Takapuna, as surgeon and agent to the Devonport Naval Base, is announced by the Naval Board. Dr. Stewart was born in- Dunedin, and educated at the Timaru Boys' High School and Otago University. He graduated in 1924 after resuming his medical studies interrupted by the war years. Before entering private practice in Auckland in 1929, Dr. Stewart was a member of the resident staffs of the Dunedin, Wanganui and Wellington Hospitals. Dr. Stewart, who holds also the position of surgeon to the No ; 1 Squadron of the New Zealand Air Force, had a notable war record. Between and 1916 he served as adjutant of the New Zealand divisional train on Galiipoli and in France. For the remaining period of the war he was attached, with the rank of captain, to the Koyal Air Force. He had considerable flying experience, and gained the Military Cross.
