diverse entertainment ATHLETICS AND SPORTS EXCURSIONS TO BEACHES VARIED PROGRAMME ARRANGED Many and varied will be the opportunities for enjoyment available to Aucklanders to-day and for the remainder of the Easter holidays. Given fine weather all who wish to do so will bo able to find out of doors ample scope for forgetting the workaday round. Large crowds will go to Ellershe today to witness the first day's programme of the Auckland Racing Club s autumn meeting, which will be continued on Monday. The inauguration of the place-betting system is expected to make this popular racing fixture even more attractive than formerly, and it is confidently anticipated that it will draw an unusually large number of racegoers to the course. University College Contests Lovers of athletics will have a great deal to choose from in the university tournament to-day, when teams from the colleges in other centres will contest a large number of events with athletes from Auckland University College. The tennis representatives will compete on the Stanley Street courts, while the eight-oar inter-collegiate contest will he rowed on the harbour this afternoon. The annual cricket match between Auckland and Victoria Colleges will commence at Eden Park, and this evening the boxing championships will be held in the Town Hall. Golfers will find much in the Auckland provincial championships, commencing at Middlemore to-day, and golf clubs will also conduct matches. The Auckland Bowling Centre's Easter tournament, which commenced yesterday, will be continued, as will the hard court championships of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. The South Auckland rifle shooting championships will be held at Waihi, while country residents will be catered for by yacht racing at Coromandel and sports gatherings at Te Kurti, Te Poi, "W aihi and Owhango. At Hamilton the contest of the South Auckland Band Contest Union will be commenced. Twelve bands, comprising 300 players, will take part. The contest will be continued on Monday. Ambulance Competitions A fixture of great interest in the Auckland Domain to-day will be the annual efficiency competitions of the St. John Ambulance Displays will be given of stretcher bearing, first aid and nursing, and Auckland doctors will act as judges. The competitors will include teams from Dunedin, Wellington, Whangarei and Hamilton, and Colonel G. Barclay, chief commissioner of the brigade in New Zealand, will be present. On Easter Monday the university athletic championships will be contested in the Domain, while the swimming championships will be held in the evening at the Tepid Baths. Basketball matches will take place at the university grounds. The golf and tennis championships will be continued, as will the bowling tournament. Sports gatherings will be held at Piopio, Otorohauga and Ngongotaha. On Tuesday the golf championships will bo completed, and post-section play in the bowling tourney will be held on the Carlton Club green. Picnicking and motoring will have many devotees, and in anticipation oi the usual holiday demand for transport additional trips will be run by the various motor services. Tramways facilities will be augmented as the need arises. Special launch and steamer trips will be made to the ever-popular beaches and islands of the Hauraki Gulf. The many will s'bek evening entertainment indoors will be liberally catered for by the managements of theatres and cabarets.
