GOOD FRIDAY SERVICES

OBSERVANCE IN CHURCHES Appropriate Good Friday services were held in many of tho churches yesterday. Tho day was widely observed as the anniversary of the Crucifixion, and tho attendances were generally largo. At St. Mary's Cathedral the Rev. Canon Fancourt was the preacher at the morning service, and the three hours' devotion, commencing at noon, was conducted by Archbishop Averill. The cantata "The Passion" (Varley Roberts) was rendered by the cathedral choir in tho evening. The preacher at the morning service in St. Matthew's Church was Archdeacon Simkin, and in the evening Canon Strong. The devotion of tho three hours was conducted by tho Rev. Cecil Watson at St. Paul's, where in tho evening coloured lantern slides of tho Crucifixion and the Resurrection wero shown. Tho special services at the Church of tho Holy Sepulchre included a morning children's service, and a lantern service in the evening. At tho Church of the Epiphany tho cantata "Olivet to Calvary" was rendered in tho evening. Good Friday services wero continued yesterday at St. Patrick's Cathedral, beginning in the morning with the mass of tho presanctificd. Tho special preacher in the evening was Father i Innocent Doyle. Many of the Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Congregational and other churches had special services, and in some instances several denominations combined. There were united communion services in the Baptist Tabernacle and tho Beresford Street Congregational Church. Morning services were conducted in St. David's and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Churches, and an evening service in tho Pitt Street Methodist Church. "Tho Crucifixion" was rendered by combined Methodist choirs in tho evening at tho Epsom Methodist Church. Tho Salvation Army held special united meetings at tho Newton Corps Hall in tho morning and an evening meeting tho Congress Hall was led by Captain' Wallace. Accompanied by tho choir of St. Peter's Cathedral, the members marched down Victoria Street to Ferry Bank, whero an open-air service was conducted by Bishop Cherrington in the presence of a large gathering of people.
