MOTORISTS' AFFAIRS
SIGNS AT NARROW BRIDGES PROGRESS OF ASSOCIATION Signs on one-car bridges will in future read "One-way bridge," with the addition at the more suitable end of "Please give way." At last evening s meeting of the council of the Automobile Association the signs were discussed. It was stated the new signs were being tried by the Wellington Association, but the mistake had been made in some instances of adding the phrase "Please Give Way at both ends of the bridge, resulting m considerable confusion. . The metalling of the uncompleted portion of the Muriwai Road toward the beach was urged. The difficulties met by New Zealand motorists of nearly 20 years ago m advocating better roads were recalled by Mr. W. H. Hemingway, a New Zealander who has spent the past 14 years in the United States and who is a former president of the Auckland Automobile Association. He spoko of the opposition from farmers who were then not motorists encountered by himself and the secretary, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, when urging the development ot highways. "I am amazed that the membership of the association has .jumped from a few hundreds in my time to the present total of over 16,000,'' said Mr. Hemingway. Mr. Hemingway was elected a life member.
