NON-PETROL VEHICLES
FEW REGISTRATIONS MADE SPECIAL TAXATION RATES Only eight vehicles driven by power other than motor spirit have been registered in Auckland for tho purposes of tho special taxation imposed by tho Government to run parallel with tho increase in potrol taxes. Of tho eight, one vehicle is driven by steam, one by crude oil, one by electricity and five by power kerosene. In view of the opinions freely expressed concerning tho numbers of motor vehicles using kerosene or a keroseno mixture, tho figures would appear low, but it has been pointed out that the special rate of taxation would in most cases pay tho owner, where possible, to revert to petrol for his motive power. All owners of vehicles, the motive power for which was not wholly derived from motor spirits, were obliged to give notification to tho registrar beforo mid-day on Saturday, and 011 the seventh of each month they are to make declarations of the mileages run during tho month. Tho rate of taxation ranges from 4s 9d to 13s 6d for each 100 miles, according to the weight of tho vehicle. Tho amount of tax is reduced by 60 per cent if tho vehiclo uses electricity as its main motivo power, and the rates are also variable if any changes aro made in the taxation of petrol.
