MINOR FIRES
NEW CONTROL SYSTEM The metropolitan fire control systeiti came into force on Saturday, and several minor outbreaks were dealt with. The first call was in the morning to a peat fire in Mount Roskill, but in the circumstances it was not necessary to despatch a supplementary brigade from a neighbouring station. At 4.11 p.m. a call was received to a house m Ponsonby Road, where some clothing had caught alight. The Central and Ponsonby brigades answered the call, the outbreak being extinguished before damage to the house had been caused. • A gorse fire on a vacant section iu Sackville Street, Grey Lynn, was extinguished by the same brigades without difficulty. At 6.40 p.m. on Saturday a false alarm was given from v iU " cent Street to the City brigade.
