FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD FALSE FIRE ALARMS The following are extracts from tie New Zealand Herald of April 3, 1883: It is reported that. the Orleans Princes are disposing of their estates in France. General Thebaudin, French Minister of War, has suppressed the proposed cavalry manoeuvres, as he distrusts General Gallifit. The births in the Auckland district for the month of March were 167, of which 90 were in the borough of Auckland. The deaths were 69, of which 33 were in the borough. There were 45 marriage licences issued, of which 12 were solemnised in the registrar s office. The larrikins, or children of larger growth, are still tampering with the fire alarm system. On Saturday morning, about one o'clock, another alarm was given from the Upper Queen Street station (the glass disc being broken), and the custodian of the station roused up Superintendent Hughes, who dressed and mounted the look-out tower, but soon ascertained the alarm ; was a hoax.
