LOW BIRTH-RATE
FIGURES FOR ENGLAND DECREASE IN MARRIAGES Only one other country—Sweden—had a lower birth-rate for 1931 than England and Wales. This was revealed by the Registrar-General's statistical review for England and Wales, which was issued recently. The births registered during 1931 numbered (332,081, a decreaso of 16,730. The birth-rate of 15.8 per 1000 population is the lowest recorded for England and Wales, being 0.5 below that of 1930, which was tho previous lowest. One other country, Austria, also had a rate of 15.8. The number of marriages solemnised in England and Wales during that year was 311,847, against 315,109 in 1930. As to age at marriage, 22 boys and 779 girls married at sixteen, tho lowest legal ago at which marriages may bo solemnised. While tho boys married girls up to 24 years of age, the girls married males of varying ages between 16 and 60. in only three cases wero. tho brido and bridegroom both sixteen.
