ROYAL SQUADRON'S RACES CRUISING EVENT TO MAHAKI MANENE WINS M CLASS The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a cruising race for yachts and launches on Saturday afternoon and also a harbour lace for class M. The yachts raced to Onetangi and the launches to Matiatia, while the M boats competed over a harbour course. The conditions were favourable for yachting, a full-sail breeze from the southwest prevailing during the greater part of the afternoon. In the race for keel yachts a number of youths belonging to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve were the guests of the boat-owners. Details are as follows: KEEL YACHTS The race to Onetangi brought out 1!) competitors which were given their handicaps at the start. The limit boat was Alex.i, which was timed to start at 2 p.m., but she did not get away until 2.5 p.m. The order in which the boats started was as follows :-Alexa (30m). Janet (24m), Kotuku (23in), Mahaki (2uw). \\ airiki (1!a). Ilex (19m), Windward (17m), Waitanu (17m), Kotiri (15m), Little Jim Ladye "Wilma (14m), Waione (18m), Ida (12m), Victory (10m). The direction of the wind, which was rather light at times, gave the boats a spinnaker run to their destination and most of the back-markers wore unable to overhaul the limit boats. Mahaki, which was sent away with Kotuku at 2.7 p.m., passed the latter, and also Janet and Alexa. The boats were sent j away together at 1.50 p.m., the race being i decided on the nominated time system of i handicapping. The winner was Coquette, j which was 50s outside her estimated time ' of 78m. Kathryn .R was second (Ira 48s out- ' side her time of 77m) and Linda (3m 28s | outside her time of 82m) was third. Lady j Margaret was 4m fis and Wailani 5m 40s | outside their estimated times. WIN PGR MANENE ! The race for M class brought out Manene. I Mawhiti, Maroro and Manu. The course ! was from King's Wharf, thence round the | red light buoy in Rangitoto Channel, I thence round the Bastion beacon, thence round the Sandspit beacon, finishing at starting line. Manene crossed the line too soon and lost 4m 18s in recrossing. Of the actual start Manu was first away, closely followed by Jlawhili and Maroro. Manu continued her lead on the run down the harbour, followed by Maroro and Mawhiti. After rounding the Red Light buoy Maneno caught and passed Mawhiti and later she headed Maroro on tho beat across tho harbour from the Sandspit. She was doing well ill the light weather and just before reaching the finishing line she also passed Manu. The race started at 2.45 p.m. The finishing times were:—Manene. 4h 35m 2s: Manu, 4h 35m 50s; Maroro, 4h 30m 17s; Mawhiti. 41i 37m 37b. The result was:—Manene, 1; Manu, 2: Maroro, 3. TAMAKI CLUB'S EVENTS HANDICAPS AT KOHIMARAMA The Tamaki Yacht Club held a scries of races for 18ft. and under classes on Saturday afternoon. All events started and finished off Kohimrvraraa Wluirf and were sailed under ideal weather conditions. Good entries were received and some closo finishes were recorded. In addition to the club races tho final of tlio threo heats for tho Speedwell Cup was also decided, resulting in a win for Mr. A. Williamson's Wahine. There was very little between the boats on the run to the first murk, but, after this was rounded. Paroro gradually worked her way into the lead and finished well ahead of her rivals. Sceptre and Namu drew away from the rest of the fleet Boon after tho start, tho former beating Namu "in" by lm 10s. In the raco for class T Shalimar headed her rivals soon after tho start and established a big lead, which she maintained round the course. Ramona and Sybila made a very close raco of 'it, only one second separating them at tho finish. SPEEDWELL CUP CONTEST WAHINfi WINS THE FINAL The final race for the ■ Speedwell Cup for Wakatere class boats waA sailed on Saturday afternoon under the control ot' the Tamaki Yacht Club. The raco started and finished oil Kohimarama Wharf and was won by Wahine, owned and sailed by Mr. A, Williamson. The conditions were very favourable for smr.ll boat sailing, a light south-westerly wind prevailing throughout the afternoon. The competitors were the threo pliced boats in a series of three heats held last month. All boats started from scratch and, after a close race bo twecn Wahine and Waiata, which drew away from the other competitors, Wahine crossed the line the winner by 38 eeconds. MANUKAU YACJHT CLUB FELLOWSHIP CUP CONTEST The annual contests between the Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club nnd the Takapuna Boating Club for the fceHowslnp and Juvenile Harmony Cups were held on the Manukau on Saturday afternoon under the control of the Manukau# Club. The senior event was decided in the 16-footers Phoebe and Phyllis, and the junior contest in Z class boats. In addition to the cup contests, a sweepstake race for all club boats was held over No. 1 course. The Fellowship Cup was won by the Manukau Club and the Junior Harmony Cup by the Takapuna Club. Details are as follows.— JUVENILE HARMONY CUP The contest for the Juvenile Harmony Cud was sailed off in two heats and a final. In the first heat Takapuna drew Tuatea and Manukau Nor' Wilson.
