EXPANSION OF BUSINESS

Saturday Personal contact with commercial and other interests in Wollington has been mado during the past week by the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Australia, Mr. L. J. Schmitt, and it is his intention to get in touch with traders in other centres during the next fortnight or threo weeks, before he returns to Sydney. Discussing the work of the ftcw Zealand office in Sydney, Mr. Schmitt said tlio business was expanding continually. During tho past year New Zealand's trade with Australia had increased by over 20 per cent, the value of the goods sold to the Commonwealth being £l,-145,000, compared with £1,169,000 during the preceding 12 months. On the other hand, Australia's sales to New Zealand increased from £2,131,000 to £2,681,000. Every conceivable form of business on behalf of Now Zealand was put through the Sydney office, said Mr. Schmitt. There were 25,000 New Zealanders in Sydney, and 50,000 in Australia. Apart from the hundreds who visited tho Commonwealth each year and mado much uso of the Trade Commissioner's office, the Sydney office did a great deal of work for practically every New Zealand Department of State. Publicity work took up a great deal of time. During tho last year Mr. Schmitt visited every Stato of tho Commonwealth, except Western Australia, giving lectures and broadcasting upon New Zealand. Last year ho gavo 50 radio talks and this year already ho has given about 20.
