FASCISM AND DEMOCRACY

Sir, —A dictatorship can only be successful so long as tho dictator does tho right thing, and there is 110 guarantee that it will bo any more successful than a true democracy with the chances of it being a thousand times worse. Although Mussolini has apparently made a success of his rule in Italy there is 110 guarantee that the crop of dictators that is springing up will do the same. Just as the British people liavo no liking for revolutionary tactics, so they will not tolerate any Government that savours of the old autocracy our forefathers fought against. Tho great risk of appointing a dictator is that you may get the wrong man and incalculable harm may be dono before the people can regain their liberty. No system of government will bring back prosperity to the people so long as it legislates in the interests of a privileged few. Apparently these sarao few are suggesting that wo place ourselves under a dictator, but if the dictator does the right thing then it will be they who will call for his removal by force or otherwise. We are at present suffering because wo have defied the most dictatorial power in the universe, and that is the power of natural laws, which apply to economics just as much as they do to other functions of life. It is only when a dictator understands and applies these laws regardless of vested interests that ho can bo successful, using the happiness of tho people as tho measure of valuo for success. Logic.
