TWO FAMILIES BURIED SEVENTEEN PEOPLE HURT THRILLING RESCUE INCIDENTS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON. March 27 Six people were killed and 17 injured in an explosion at Gateshead, Durham. It is believed to have been due to a steain excavator on a road damaging a gas main. * Two houses collapsed and the two families in occupation were buried. Adjoining premises were wrecked. Fire followed the explosion and several people were injured or seriously burned. Rescuers worked at great risk owing to falls of red hot bricks. Mr. William Hood, a relative of the victims, was injured when he climbed the ruins and fixed a ropo to a tottering chimney stack, which he felled. Mr. William Devenport, 67, was pinned beneath beams but successfully protected his baby grand-daughter for an hour until he was rescued. He staggered out carrying the child, but then collapsed and died.
