EMDEN'S NAME-PLATE
PLACE IN NEW VESSEL GERMAN ADMIRAL'S THANKS BERLIN, March 22 " We thank the Australians for their magnanimity in relinquishing this trophy," said Vice-Admiral Forster, at the unveiling of the old Emden's nameplate on the new Emden. The nameplate is fixed on the quarter-deck above the rear gun. Addressing the crew, the vice-admiral said: "We promise to do our duty toward the people and the Fatherland, in the same spirit as the old Emden did it." He described how the nameplate had been ceremoniously handed to the President, Marshal von Hindenburg, by Mr. S. M. Bruce, Australian Minister in London, and recalled Mr. Bruce's words: "The enmity of both nations is definitely buried." When the old Emden's flag, which veiled the nameplate, was removed, guns fired a salute, and tho crow cheered the President, and sang "Deutschland Über Alles."
