SWIMMING RECORDS

FEATS BY AUSTRALIANS c. PHILLIPS AND V. BESOMO THOMAS* FURLONG VICTORY VISITORS WIN RELAY RACE Record-breaking swims by C. Phillips' and V. Besomo, two of the visiting Australian swimmers, a brilliant victory over 220 yards by the Aucklander, R. Thomas, r and a well-deserved win by New South •' Wales in the 800 yards relay race against Auckland, thrilled a great crowd that . • crammed the seating accommodation in the Tepid Baths last evening. Phillips ■» put up his time in winning the 150 yards scratch race for intermediates, and Be- i somo mado a successful attack on the New Zealand record for 100 metres backstroke. His time, lm 12 2-ss, bettered L. •: J. Moorhouse's record by eeven seconds. /■; The honours of the evening went to the * visitors, because they scored two wins to r one by Auckland. Two carnivals had already been decided and in the whole - *.» series New South Wales and Auckland ..; have now shared the honours equally. An Exciting Finish The first of the main contests was the 220 yards open scratch race for seniors. A race over this distance, decided at the C first carnival of the Australians' tour, was 1 ! won by V. Besomo from R. Frankham ' ! and R. Thomas, both of Auckland, i that the visitor was considered to have j tho brightest prospects of winning last j evening. Over the first 100 yards the field ~ | kept practically together. At the 100-yard j mark, Frankhain led Besomo and Thomafi, j who were on equal terms, by half a _'* j yard. O. Griffiths, New South Wales, the " I only other starter, was handy. By the " time five laps, 166 2-3 yards, had been covered, Thomas and Besomo, who had moved ahead of Frankham together, led the New Zealand champion by a yard. r In the next lap Griffiths came into the J picture, and at 200 yards he turned with Thomas, Besomo being a mere foot be- . » hind. Frankham had dropped into last position. Amid tremendous excitement, ' the champions sprinted over the last 20 yards. Thomas' effort was the fastest,, and he won a magnificent contest by a foot from Besomo. Griffiths, beaten for second place by only two feet, touched the ro.pe three yards in front of Frankham. Thomas' time, although 1 l-5s slower than Frankham's New Zealand record, was regarded as a brilliant performance. A Decisive Win In the 150 yards scratch race for inter- i' mediates there were three starters, C. Phillips, New South Wales, N. Crump, ' Auckland, and W. Johnson, Auckland. Phillips won splendidly in lm 29 1-56. « This time lowered G. Bridson'g Aus- r tralian and New Zealand senior record by 2 l-ss. The first lap, 33 I*3 yards, was, completed by Phillips and Crump equally, but at 100 yards the young Australian led by half a yard. Johnson was four yards further back. Phillips, a vastly improved swimmer since his last appearance in Auckland a fortnight ago, was unbeatable, and he gradually drew away from his opponents to gain victory from Crump by 4£ yards. Crump beat Johnson by / - about" five yards. i ■" Although the visitors won comfortably by five yards, l the 800 yards relay race * between New South Wales and Auckland always held the interest ,of the spectators. F. Griffiths and W. Johnson swam "• first and Johnson gave Frankham ft lead of two yards over Phillips. The lastnamed reduced the Auckland lead to half yard for the man following hinj, O. Griffiths, who was matched against N. Crump. These two swimmers had a great race, Griffiths winning by a foot. The * last to swim were V. Basomo and R. - Thomas. For four laps they kept to- « gether, but in the fifth lop Besomo dashed ahead and gave New South Wales & win by five yards. The time, 8m 48 2-ss. wai splendid. \ Details ol the Racing After all the races had been decided O.
