STREET APPEAL

TIIE FLUNKET SOCIETY % SUM OF £366 RECEIVED INCREASE ON LAST YEAR There was a splendid response to tho Plunket Society's annual street appeal yesterday, £366 being collected, a sura slightly greater than last year. One return has yet to ho added. "The result is very gratifying," said the secretary, Mrs. J. Allen, last evening. As was to bo expected, there were many coins of small denominations, although a number of 10s and £1 notes was received. "Tho fact that the collection included about 2000 pennies shows that, in spite of the difficult times, everyone tried to do his bit by giving something at least,". Mrs. Allen said. An overseas visitor, who said he was greatly impressed by tlia society's work for mothers and infants, contributed £5.

Throughout the day the society's numerous helpers were busy at stalls in the city and suburbs, and few pedestrians passed without contributing something. The slight improvement in the total this year is in remarkable contrast to last year's decrease of about £l2O. The result is tangible evidence of the public's appraciation of the efforts of the society. Re--markable success has already attended endeavours to reduce the infant mortality rate in tho Dominion.
