WALLACE FORGOTTEN

NOVELS LOSING FAVOUR Just over 12 months ago the world was shocked to hear of the tragic death in Hollywood of Edgar Wallace. Now this man, whose novels were translated into almost every language under the sun, whose books sold at the rate of 2,000,000 a year, and who earned more than £200,000 during the eight years preceding his death, is almost forgotten. Recently a London newspaper representative visited a big bookshop where a year ago rows upon rows of Edgar Wallace novels were on sale. He found that death has robbed the great novelist of his fame and popularity with brutal completeness. , " Twelve months ago we carried huge stocks of Wallace novels, and sold scores a week," said the bookseller. " To-day well, look at the shelves. I don't believe we have half a-dozen of them in stock, and we count ourselves lucky if we sell two or three a week."
