MEMORIAL DEDICATED
HANGING ROOD IN CHURCH The hanging iood erected in St. Thomas' Church, Freeman's Bay, w&.s dedicated last evening in the presence of a large congregation. The rood is a memorial to the late Mrs. Gertrude Raynes, of Franklin Road, and is the gift of her husband, Mr. Joseph Raynes. The preacher was the Rev. H.. Fallows, who designed and painted tho rood. The central ilgure of Christ, said Mr. Fallows, was in its essential features a replica of the crucifix used in England at Anglo-Catholic congresses. It was not a dead but a living Christ. The eyes were open, the head erect and the two fingers of the right hand in the posture of blessing. The whole figure was intended to express the attitude of conquest and triumph over death and sin. In panals were shown the Virgin Mary, St. John and symbols of God the Father, God the Holy Ghost and, in the lowest panel, the Agnus Dei. Mr. Fallows paid a tribute to the architectural fitness of the rood, which had been planned by Mr. Farrer Middlebrook. It was made and placed in position by Mr. Andrew Parkinson, of Pon* sonby.
