BETTER DEMAND FOR BEEF

Prices for fat stt>ck wcro very firm at late rates at tho weekly Westfiekl salo yesterday. The yarding of beef over-all declined as compared with the previous week, tho number being about 800 against 1100 head. The supply of ox beef was short, heifers and cows being yarded in averago numbers. Somo good quality lines wcro entered and the demand showed an improvement on last week, as numbers were more equal to requirements. There was a keen inquiry for ox and prices, although quoted nominally unchanged, showed a firming tendency. Values for cow and heifer beef showed little variation. Exporters were able to operate to a limited extent on tho beef market.

Sheep camo forward in large numbers from several parts of the province. There was again a large proportion of store sheep, including somo Northern consignments. Buyers operated freely and''" values were a shade better for both wethers and ewes. There was an average yarding of lambs, which met with a ready sale at unchanged rates. Calves were in average supply and values were on a par with last week. Very few good quality calves were yarded. Tn the pig section the demand was fully equal to the supply and there was a steady disposal at satisfactory rates. Prime baconers mado fully late prices and porkers were in slightly better demand. Mr. H. E. Reed, of Waerenga, sent forward a truck of steers, which made up to £B, a further consignment realising between £6 15s mid £7 15s. A truck from the Paparoa district made from £6 10s to £7 17s 6d, and steers from Puketutu realised from £6 to £7 12s 6d. A draft from Mr. C. G. Vosper, of Cambridge, made up to £7 10s, and prices up to £7 were realised by two trucks from Mr. G. Vosper, of Maungataupiri, Steers from Mr. H. WindsoV, Tamahere, sold to £6 12s 6d, and values ranging from £6 7s 6d to £6 10s were secured by a truck from Craven Brothers, Ruawai.

Included ,in a draft of cows and heifers from Ruatangata were two cows which sold at £6 2s 6d, while two trucks of cows and heifers from Mr. Windsor mado up to £5 17s 6d. Two consignments from the Morrinsville district, sold on account of Mr. W. Scholium, made from £4 to £4 7s 6d and up to £5 ss. A truck from Mr. G. Donaldson, Okaihau, brought up to £4 2s 6d.

Competition was more keen and in many cases last week's values were improved upon.
