DEATH OF WIDOW
MOTOR-CAR OVERTURNS VEHICLE OUT OF CONTROL A fatality which occurred, according to witnesses, as a consequence of a runaway motor-car being turned in to a bank in an effort to check its career was the subject of an inquest held before the coroner, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., yesterday. The victim of the accident was a widow, Mrs. Ellen Sainty, aged 49, of 68 Old Mill Road, Grey Lynn. The accident occurred at Titirangi on January 20, and Mrs. Sainty died in the Auckland Hospital two days later. Evidence was given by Miss Kathleen Clark, of Hamilton, that, about noon on January 20, she was driving a car down to the beach at Titirangi. The vehicle became out of control and it struck a bank. The car overturned, and Mrs. Sainty, who was thrown out, was the only person injured.
The coroner returned a verdict that death was due to congestion of the lungs following injuries received when the car accidentally overturned. The driver was not familiar with the steep road, the vehicle for some reason getting out of control. Under the circumstances, it appeared to be a proper thing to turn the car in to the bank in the hope of checking it, but the vehicle, unfortunately, overturned.
