BIBLES NOT TAXED
EXEMPTION INTENDED ASSURANCE OF MINISTER [BT TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON. Friday Surprise has been expressed that Bibles have not been mentioned specifically in the list of exemptions from (he sales tax, but- it was made clear by the Minister of Customs, Mr. Goates, in the House today, that the tax would not apply in that case. "Some people are concerned that the Holy Bible is not exempted," said the Minister, "hut. I would point out that the free list, includes religious tracts, Sunday School lesson sheets, cards and tickets," Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour —Napier): Bu( the Bible is not a religious tract, nor is it a Sunday School lesson sheet. Mr. Goates: I have great respect for your legal knowledge, but I assure you that the Bible is exempted under the provision.
