RACE TO KAWAU

TWENTY YACHTS COMPETE ADMIRAL BLAKE'S TROPHY VICTORY FOR ARIKI The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's annual race fo Kavvau for a trophy presented by Admiral G. Blake started off King's Wharf at 7 o'clock last evening. Twenty keel yachts faced the starter and they presented a very pretty sight as they crossed the line before a full-sail breeze from the west. The course was from starting line direct to W onion a Point, Kawau, a distance of 27 sea miles. The direction of the wind gave the boats a spinnaker run as far as North Head, where light sails were taken in and sheets brought aboard for the close haul to Kawau The entries and handicaps were:—Ariki, scr.; lorangi, lm; Nga-Toa, 2m 30s; Waitangi, 10m; Prize, Ilex, 12m; Rawene, Victory, Ida, 16m; Waione, 18m; Ladye Wilma, Little Jim, 20m; Kotiri, 22m; Windward, 28m; Wairiki, Medina, 33m; Mahaki, 35m; Kotuku, 4om; Janet, 48m; Gloriana, 52m; Rangi (handicap withheld). The boats all kept well above the starting line and, when the signal to start was given, only Kotuku, Waione, and Ariki got away on time, the others being late as followsMahaki, 225; Windward, 245; Ladye Wilma, 30s; lorangi, 325; Nga-Toa, 425; Kotiri, 435 ; Janet, 465; Medina, 51s; Victory, 565; Waitangi, lm 255; Prize, lm 30s; Rangi, lm 40s; Rawene, 2m ss; Ida, 2m 13s; Little Jim, 2m 20s; Wairiki, 3m 225; Ilex, 8m 20s. Prize, lorangi, Waitangi, Ariki, Ilex and Victory earned topsails, and NgaToa, Ladye Wilma. Janet and Mahaki were reefed, the remainder of the fleet carrying full sail. Ariki took the lead immediately after the start and drew away from the fleet, followed by Nga-Toa and lorangi. The lastnamed had trouble with her spinnaker and was passed by Victory, which was sailing well. The boats all worked the northern shore and soon began to tail out. Rounding North Head, the order'was;— Ariki, Nga-Toa, Victory, lorangi, Kotiri, Waitangi, Prize, Windward, Kotuku, Waione, Little ,Jim, Rawene, Ida, Janet, Ladye Wilma, Medina, Mahaki, Rangi, Wairiki and Ilex. Several of the leading boats stood too close under North Head and lost the wind for a minute or two. A wireless message from Kawau to the Herald stated that the result of the race was:—Ariki, 1; lorangi, 2. The annual Kawau Regatta will be held to-day.
