COLLECTION OF RATES
COUNTY COUNCIL'S POSITION PENALTY TO BE IMPOSED [BY TELEGRAM —OWN CORRESPONDENT] NGATEA, Friday The necessity of collecting current rates was stressed at a meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday, when the clerk, Mr. E. A. Mahonej, stated that a payment of interest amounting to £2823 was due on March 1. Owing to heavy reductions in rates during the last two years, the. council s reserves, accumulated over several previous years, were nearly exhausted, he said. It now became imperative to collect as much as possible in the shortest time. The clerk's statement showed that rates outstanding totalled £26,402. The arrears on March 31, 1932, had been £14,046. This year's rates totalled £31,209. The arrears collected this year amounted to £3792, while the current year's rates paid totalled only £lOl4. It was decided to impose a 10 per cent penalty on March 22 on unpaid rates.
