NEW FRENCH CRUISER
NOVEL. CONTROL PROBABLE RADIO ORDERS FROM BALLOON . v• v « r'l , -'f "" i - L6NDOX F«b. 1 The new-French cruiser-Dunkirk may be chosen for a novel method ol fleet control, writes Admiral Degouy, in La Quotidien.
Under the method in question an admiral commanding a fleet would direct his ships from a captive balloon or kite, connected with the flagship by telephone, and able to rise to a great height whence, offering a small target to an enemy, it would transmit orders by wireless. Admiral Degouy reveals that the design of the Dunkirk, which will Be com? pleted in 1936, was influenced by that -of the Nelson and Rodney. The heavy artillery concentrated forward, and the secondary armament aft. Eight 13-inch guns will be mounted in two armoured turrets to fire over each other.
The arrangement has been criticised, on account of the risk of half the ship's heavy guns being disabled by a lucky shot. *
