MANY BICYCLES STOLEN
CONCERN AT DEVONPORT MACHINES MISSED AT WHARF A bicycle thief, who has been active during the past three weeks, has been causing concern in Devonport. About 12 machines have been reported to the police as having been stolen. from the entrance to the Devonport ferry wharf, where workers travelling to the city leave their cycles until their return from work. A watch has been maintained by the police, but in spite of an intensive inquiry, the missing machines have not been found. The bicycles removed had not been locked in any way. Several hundreds of bicycles are left at the wharf daily and large numbers of owners fail to take precautions against theft. BIOYOLE THIEF SENT TO PRISON COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE - [by telegraph—PßESS ASSOCIATION] WANGANUI, Tuesday When William Mitchell was charged m the Police Court with the theft of a bicycle this morning, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., remarked that bicycle thefts were very common. He had already expressed the opinion that they must bo met with imprisonment. They meant considerable loss and inconvenience to the owners. Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
