IMPORTS FROM CANADA
PAYMENT OF SURTAX CONTINUANCE ARRANGED A special arrangement has been made between the Governments of New Zealand and Canada by which the surtax on goods imported from Canada is maintained, in spite of the fact that a remission has been granted in the case of imports from Great Britain. This statement is made ill a letter received by Mr. A. M. Seaman, president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, from the Minister of Customs, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. 'Mr. Seaman,wrote to the Minister on January 19, stating that an article in the trade agreement* with Canada provided that either Dominion could impose any special duty or tax on goods from the other country provided that, except where specially arranged between the Dominion Governments, the duty or tax did not exceed that imposed on similar goods from Great Britain. He asked if any special arrangement had been mado whereby Canada- agreed to be exempted from the remission of surtax recently accorded to Great Britain.
Mr. Coates replied that a special arrangement was made with Canada for the maintenance of surtax, but that no formal agreement was drawn up:
