BEACHES THREATENED
DISPOSAL OF SEWAGE HARBOUR BOARD'S PROTEST "The time has come for the Auckland Harbour Board to ask tho Drainage Board to make some move in tho matter," said Mr. 11. R. Mackenzie at a meeting of tho Harbour Board yesterday, when a copy of a report of a committee of inquiry on sewage and stormwater disposal was received. "The amount of sewage in the harbour is spoiling tho beaches. Now that we have a fine beach within easy reach of the city at Mission Bay, we are entitled to ask tho Drainage Board on behalf of tho public of Auckland that something be done to counteract the washing up of such refuse," he said. It was docided that a letter should be written to the Drainage Board stating that in the opinion of the board the time had arrived for something to bo done to prevent the spoiling of beaches by sewage.
A resolution passed at a meeting of ratepayers and residents of the Takapuna Riding was forwarded by the Waitemata County Council, in which a protest was made against tho proposal that the sewage outfall and treatment works for the northern area of tho Drainage Board's scheme should be at a point on the foreshore between Campbell's Bay and Castor Bay. It was considered that the proposal, if carried out, woud irreparably damage the east coast beaches.
It was decided to reply stating that tho area concerned was more than a mile from where the jurisdiction of the Harbour Board ended, but that attention should bo called to tho fact that the Minister of Marine controlled the area.
