REOPENING OF SCHOOLS
SECONDARY PUPILS RETURN NUMBERS ON THE ROLLS Pupils of .State secondary schools commenced the first term yesterday after the summer holidays. There are 957 on the roll of the Auckland Grammar School, practically the same number as last year. Of that total, 921 were present yesterday. "The position is better than I expected," said the headmaster, Mr. H. J. D. Mahon. Although the number of new pupils at the Mount Albert Grammar School is about the same, there are about 80 fewer former pupils returning to school. The roll has fallen from 630 to 550. This seems to indicate a more hopeful outlook for boys leaving school, according to the headmaster, Mr. F. W. Gamble. At Takapuna Grammar School there is an increase of 20, from 480 to 500. The advance is accounted for by more new entrants, the number returning being practically unaltered. "I hardly expected such an increase," remarked the headmaster, Mr. C. M. Littlejohn. There is a reduction of about 70 pupils at the Auckland Girls' Grammar School, partly compensated for by an increase of 40 at the Epsom Girls' Grammar School. The changes are attributed to the altered boundaries instituted at the beginning of last year. The Seddon Memorial College and Sacred Heart College also reopened yesterday. The Diocesan ITigli School for Giris will" resume to-day, and St. Cutlibert's College and King's College tomorrow.
FEWER PUPILS AT WHANGAREI EFFECT OF THE DEPRESSION [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT J WHANGAREI, Tuesday The economic depression is the reason for the decreased attendances at .the YVliangarei High School and Hostel this year, according to the principal, Mr. A. It. Ryder. There aro 330 pupils at the senior school, compared with 370 last year, while in the junior school there are 300 against 310 last year. In the hostels there are 20 hoys, compared with 40 last year and 17 boarders in the girls' hostel, compared with 36 last year. "A number of pupils are boarding in town, where they are getting cheaper board than at the hostels," added Mr. Ryder, "and a number of pupils arc remaining at home this year and taking advantage of the correspondence course supplied by the Education Department, with the intention of returning to school when the finances of their parents improve."
