SACRIFICE FOR RELIGION
INDIAN SOLDIER'S PLEA PROTEST THROUGH MURDER CALCUTTA, Jan. 29 At the court-martial of Jang Singh, a native soldier, arrested for the murder of an Englishman named Thompson, the prisoner declared that his protests against being compelled to cat and drink with Mazbhi Sikhs, drafted from another regiment, whom he regarded as untouchables, had been unheeded. He therefore decided to kill an officer and then to sacrifice himself in the cause of his religion, which forbade him to feed with a lower caste. He had served in the Army for over seven years and was still loyal. The hearing is proceeding.
Jang Singh, who shot an Englishman named Thompson on January 1, was arrested in the jungle after several hours of sniping at a detachment of soldiers. At the time of the arrest, the police stated that the attack on Thompson was the outcome of discontent over the clisbandment of Indian pioneer units under which many Sikhs of lower social standing were transferred to the Bombay Sappers, of which Singh was a non-commis-sioned officer.
