MISHAPS AT TENNIS
PLAYERS INJURE HANDS BOTH RESUME GAMES Two minor mishaps occurred in connection with the concluding day's play in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual championship tournament at Stanley Street yesterday. The final matches in the men s and ladies' doubles were being played simultaneously, and in the former contest E. L. BartJeet and C. E. Malfrov rushed together to take a lob in a fourth set game against Stedman and Sturl. Bartleet s racquet hit his partner's right hand very hard. Play was suspended for a few minutes, and Dr. Spencer examined the injury, finding that the thumb joints of Malfroy's hand were badly bruised. Malfroy played the remainder of the set by using his lelt hand, and occasionally both hands. He recovered in the final set, although it was evident from the (linching manner in which he played most of his shots that his injury was causing him pain.
A similar mishap occurred on the adjoining court, where Misses Macfarlane were opposed to Miss Knight and Mrs. Melody. The first-named pair struck simultaneously at. a lob, and Miss Marion Macfarlitnc's racquet hit her sister on the hand, which was bruised as a rcsui'u. Play was resumed after a brief stoppage.
