BANKRUPT ARRESTED

CHARGE OF EXTRAVAGANCE REMAND OF ACCUSED A bankrupt carpenter, Thomas George Vincent, aged 37, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, charged that "being a person adjudged a bankrupt on June 24, 1932, he had, by extravagance and drunkenness, 'brought about his bankruptcy." It was further alleged that between August 1, 1931, and February 8, 1932, accused, with intent to conceal the true state of his affairs, wilfully omitted to keep proper books of accounts, and also that within three years before the commencement of his bankruptcy he failed to keep such books of accounts as were usual and proper in the type of business carried on by him. Detective-Sergeant Martin, asking for a remand, said accused was arrested on Saturday at the instigation of the official assignee. He had ignored a summons to attend a meeting at the assignee's office. Accused (from the dock): I would like to ask for bail. The Magistrate: You were served with a summons to appear on January 19 and you did not attend. Accused: I was coming in from the West Coast when the constable arrested me. I thought the summons was for January 29. ' A request by accused that he should be allowed bail in his own recognisance was refused by the magistrate, who fixed bail at £IOO in one surety or two sureties of £SO. .
