SWORDFISH AT FIJI
POSSIBILITIES OF SPORT INVESTIGATION SUGGESTED [from our own correspondent] SUVA, Jan. 26 The capture of a swordfish near Suva, which was landed by members of tha crew of tie Government ship Derek when trolling for fish, and the hooking of two swordfish on a trolling line which had been thrown over the stern of a local cutter, has aroused considerable interest locally in the possibilities of big-gamo fishing ir. Fiji waters.
In each instance the fish was hooked on an orc inary trolling .line. On two occasions the line was by no means new and the fish eventually broke the line. On the occasion last week when the swordfish was landed, the line was a new one and it stood the strain. Up to the present there ha:s been no genuine attempt by properly-equipped fishermen to try out the potertialities of. Fiji waters, although it is well known that swordfish exist in Fiji, this being confirmed by the various catches made from time to time in the more or less haphazard fashion described above. It has been suggested that the possibilities of this sport should be investigated and that Government assistance should b<3 given in this direction.
