"DANGEROUS TO DRINK"
' FINE OF £IOO IMPOSED LIQUOR AT MATAURA [by telegram —rRESS association] GORE, Tuesday A charge that spirits on which the full duty had not been paid were found on his premises at Mataura on December 30 was made against James Henry Botting in the Police Court to-day. The Collector of Customs described defendant as a distributor of illicit spirit known as "Hokonui whisky," which was most dangerous to drink from a health point of view. Under the Distillation Act, any person purchasing illicit whisky was liable to a fine of £SO and heavy imprisonment. The magistrate convicted defendant, saying that he had previously been warned. Defendant had no doubt carried on in a small way. Botting was fined £IOO and. given three months in which to pay.
