NORFOLK ISLAND FRUIT
. SHIPMENT ON MORINDA SPECIAL PERMIT REQUIRED There was a temporary, lifting of tha embargo on Australian fruit • when tha steamer Morinda arrived at Auckland from Norfolk Island yesterday. The island'is under Australian and its fruit accordingly comes within the scopa of the embargo prohibiting the importing into the Dominion of. Australian .fruit/* However, growers at Norfolk Island hail begun to pack the-fruit' for shipment by the Morinda before the embargo was announced and they were given- a special permit to ship the 1000 cases allotted under a previous quota. " ' As far as can be ascertained at present, this will be the last shipment of Bananas to arrive from Norfolk Island until ths embargo is lifted by the New- 'Zealand Government. There is nothing in its terms to give preferential treatment to Norfolk Island. ' - • - , 'A' consignment" of about *7O cases of passion fruit also arrived by the Morinda, having beeii shipped by the" Morinda under a' misapprehension. A number of growers thought that the permit "'for* bananas would apply to other varieties of fruit. Representations were .made to the Customs Department iri Wellington after the arrival of the Morinda-yesterday, with the result that a- permit was issued for the landing of the fruit. This also cQvered about 30 cases of-various fruit : and vegetables shipped privately from the island. The landing of 'the passion "fruit shipment, it is considered, will- be most welcome. It is the off season for the fruit in New Zealand and it is expected that.the shipment will bring good prices ,on' the local market. - >
