HANDICAP TOURNAMENT DECISION OF FINAL MATCHES WILSON WINS MEN'S SINGLES Tho Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual handicap tournament was brought to a conclusion at Stanley Street yesterday afternoon, when tho three remaining finals were played in warm weather. The results were us follows: Men's Singles.—M. T. Wilson (Eden and Epsom), owe 30, beat H. C. Rowlands (Eden and Epsom), owe 40, G—l, 7—5. Men's Doubles.—K. Hayr (North Auckland) and S. J. Robinson (Remuera), owe 30 3-G, beat E. W.. Griffiths (Remuera) and J. T. Harrison (Royal Oak), owe 30 4-6, 7—5, 6—4 Combined Doubles.—B. Bishop and Miss B. Bishop (Franklin), scr, beat W. ! S. Speuce (Remuera), aud Miss Jeffries (Carlton), scr, 7—5, 6—2. The finals were all keenly and closely contested, this being a tribute to the excellent handicapping of Messrs. E. W. Griffiths and J. T. Harrison, whoso worjc throughout was the subject of most favourable comment. Tho tournament wne eplendidly managed by Mr. L. J. Williamson, everything going off without the slightest hitch. Wilson played very .fine'tennis "in defeat- > ing his club mate, Rowlands, in the final of tho men's singles. His driving with both hands in the first set wa3 magnificent, his backhand being especially strong and pretty to watch. 110 was clearly the superior player in this set, Rowlands over-driving much too frequently: The second set was more evenly contested. Wilson lost a little of his accuracy, and he double-faulted on noveral occasions, suggesting that ho was overanxious. The score was even at 4-all and 5all in this set, which might have gone either way. Rowlands wae playing a good uphill fight, but. Wilson rallied at the end to tako tho two deciding games. Some good tennis was also witnessed in the final of tho men's doubles. The score ■was 5-all in tho first set and 4-all in the second, and this ,proves that - the match could easily have gone either way. Hayr and Robinson were ' the steadier pair at critical stages and this _ carried .them through. Harrison and Griffiths combined well, but the first-named faltered a little when game_ point was in his favour onmany occasions. Better combination and understanding between brother and sister won the combined doubles for Bishop and Mies Bishop. These young players hail from tho country in the Franklin County, and, considering that they have more or less to depend upon playing against each other for practice, they are really good exponents of the game, and would soon reach tho best company with matches against the more experienced city players. Spence and Miss Jeffries were strangers to each other, being paired at the last minute. Under the circumstances they did exceptionally well to reach the final, in which they combined nicely in the first set, but fell, away a little in the second.
