FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD; The following a,re extracts from the New Zealand Herald of December 29, 1882: The chief ringleaders in the recent rebellion in Egypt have been tried and sentenced, and the sentences are now in course of being carried into'effect. Arabi Pasha has been found guilty, a result which could hardly be avoided, however much he might have been encouraged in his conduct by secret hints from Stamboul. His place of exile is Ceylon, and a telegram from Cairo states that he and the other chief rebels, after having to submit to public degradation in Cairo, have started on their long journey to . exile. The term Of exile to which Arabi has been sentenced has not. been disclo?ed, but the sentences of the party range from 20 years downwards. Under wise administration in the future Egypt is sure to make such progress as will soon enable her to recover from the effects of recent misrule. , The Queensland Government has concluded a contract on the land grant system with an„Australian -syndicate for the construction of a transcontinental railway to Port Parker, on the Gulf of Carpentaria.
