SUMMER SCHOOL

LECTURES AT PAERATA [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Wednesday In the coarse of a series of lectures on " Germany, tlie Old and tlie New," at the Educational Workers' Association's Summer School at Paerata, professor G. VV. von Scdlitz, of Wellington, mentioned that the public of Germany expected victory in the war right up to the last and their defeat had left a revulsion of feeling against anything militaristic. Tlie Social Democratic Party had assumed the reins of government, and the functioning of the Leaguo of Nations or a United States of Europe was very natural to-day from the German point of view. The Rev. W. Jellie spoke cn the new spirit in poetry. He pointed out that poetry reflected" the experiences of the age, and, with the difficulties that were at present being encountered in national life, there had been a change from a calm to a dynamic spirit in modern poetry. He gave several short recitals illustrating this view. - .

The evening lecture was on " Economic Readjustments," the speaker being Dr. A. G. B. Fisher, professor of economics of the University of Otago. Later Pirandello's play, " Right You, Are If You Think You Are," was presented in the college assembly hall by members of the camp. During the afternoons, which are free from lectures, the campers enjoy tennis, cricket and. swimming.
