THE TROTTING DERBY INDIANAPOLIS TO RUN Although the three-year-old pacer Indianapolis has not made the progress hoped for since arriving at Epsom, a decision was arrived at yesterday to start him in the Great Northern Trotting Derby to-day. C. Dunleavy gave him light exercise on the dirt track yesterday, and while going at a trotting gait his leg ailment was hardly noticeable, but when breaking into a pace he moved tenderly. Mr. G. J. Barton, owner of Indianapolis, said that it was somewhat disappointing to have the horse's preparation interrupted at a critical stage. He purchased Indianapolis with a view to winning, if possible, both Derbies, and, although he was defeated at Addington last month by Taxpayer, he put up a very fine performance, which encouraged the belief that he might turn the tables on his rival at Epsom. Last season Mr. Barton purchased Tempest to try to win the Derbies, and after being beaten by Ciro in the Addington classic, he had his revenge in the Great Northern Trotting Derby.

Mr. Barton added that no one regretted the mishap more than he did, as, both fit and well, he considered that Indianapolis and Taxpayer would have treated Auckland trotting patrons to a great race. Even yet Indianapolis may make a big fight, as he is very determined and if he is not too tender on his injured limb may invest the contest with keen interest. However, if the leg gives out early, the horse will not be hunted along, as such a policy may cause still more serious trouble.
