BANDS REPRIMANDED

BREACH OF CONTEST RULES UNAFFILIATED PLAYERS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Tuesday

The New Zealand controlling body decided to reprimand the Wellington Artillery, Royal Naval Reserve, Miramar and Wellington Boys' Institute bands in consequence of certain breaches of rules at the recent Wairarapa contest. The first and second prizes for the selection contest wilt be awarded to the Masterton and Carterton bands, which tied for third place. The C. and shield trophy for the winner of the test selection is not to be awarded. The president of the association, Mr. Bennett, said the practice of playing unaffiliated bandsmen at contests was always a source of trouble, especially as provision was made in the rules for the consideration of an application for an extra man in case of accident or sickness. The breaches at Masterton were neither exceptional nor isolated. It was only a year or so, however, since separate island control was merged into one body, and it was intended to brook no continuance of a practice that had too often been ignored in the past.
