CHASE AFTER MOTOR-CAR

DRIVER IN POLICE COURT CHARGE OF INTOXICATION A salesman, Henry Watson Maxwell, aged 34, was charged in the Police Court yesterday with being intoxicated while in charge oi a motor-car. Mr. Singer entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of accused. Detective-Sergeant T. Kelly opposed an application for a remand until to-morrow, stating that it was desired to* take the evidence of a Wellington witness. Ihe magistrate, Mr. W. I\. McKean, <igH?e< to lake the evidence concerned before making the remand. A company secretary, Ronald S. Luke, of Wellington, stated that, shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday, he was approaching the junction of Broadway, Newmarket, and Khyber Pass Road, in his car. Ihe constable on traffic duty had given a signal against a car ahead, but. after a temporary halt, the vehicle proceeded along Broadway at a fast rate, turning into Remuera Road. )( "The constable boarded my car. witness stated, "and we followed the othei car. We had to do 50 miles an hour or more before we headed the other car oft bv the Remuera Library." When accused was stopped, he seemed stupefied, and smelt of liquor, witness said.
