AN ILLEGAL LOTTERY

TWO MEN HEAVILY FINED CHRISTCHURCH PROSECUTION . [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Many points concerning a "red jockey's card" lottery were revealed before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M.. this morning, when Frederick llonald Beale, aged 39, agent and salesman, was charged with establishing the lottery on October 31. He was fined £SO and costs. Hugh O'Connor, aged 37, a land salesman, charged with assisting in the conduct of the lottery, was fined £4O and costs.

Both pleaded guilty after evidence had been heard.

The police said that before each race meeting a list of tho jockeys likely to bo riding was printed, a great deal of it by guesswork. Each jockey was allotted a number, and three numbers- were marked off on every card. Tickets were sold, and the persons holding tickets with the numbers of jockeys who had most points at the meeting were entitled to a prize. It might be that in the present case there was a "take down," as threats were made to the holder of the winning ticket. Counsel for accused denied that the scheme was a "take down." There was a suggestion, he said, that a ticket had been altered.
