FOUR NEW AEROPLANES
GOVERNMENT PLACES ORDERS
THREE FOR AERO CLUB WORK
[BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER]
WELLINGTON, Tuesday
The announcement that orders for four aeroplanes had been placed by the Government was made by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, to-day.
One will be a modern Fairey machine for the use of the Defence Department. It will be stationed at Hobsonville and will be used for naval co-operation work. It is considered necessary to have at least two such machines at and the new purchase will fulfil that requirement. •
Three De Havilland Moths, similar to the type already in general use in the Dominion, are also being acquired, and on 6 each will be given on loan to the Western Federated Club at New Plymouth, the Southland Club and the Marlborough Club. The only machine in use by the last-named club was wrecked in a landing accident at Wellington on Sunday. Mr. Cobbe said it was impossible to do more for aero clubs at present owing to the financial stringency.
