AN AWKWARD BRIDGE

KAURI GULLY MISHAP

A motor-car from Northcote collided with the railing when negotiating the Kauri Gully bridge yesterday morning. Although the side protection of the upper structure was broken, the car did not leave the bridge and the driver was not i hurt. This portion of the main highway is in a dip, with a double bend, and calls for particular care on the part of motorists. In conjunction with the Main Highways Board, the Northcote Borough Council some time ago adopted a scheme for straightening the road at this point and raising the level of the bridge, which was to be constructed in concrete. The work, however, was not proceeded with as a loan would require to be sanctioned by the ratepayers.
