PRIVATE HIRE TAXIS
NEW WELLINGTON SYSTEM
Recently a deputation of a section of taxi proprietors waited upon the By-laws Committee of the Wellington City Council and asked that provision be made for certain taxi cars to run without meters and upon other special conditions which they considered desirable for what is termed the private hire taxi business. The council has.- a'pproved of a by-law pre- ' pared by the city solicitor, but with certain amendments. The cars which are to be licensed under this by-law are not to ply for hire from stands or from the streets, but are to answer calls to the proprietor's garage or by arrangement. The; maximum charges provided for in the by-law are Is 6d for every five minntes during the first hour and thereafter Is for every five minutes. Clauses fixing the minimum fare at 4s 6d and to prohibit the calculation of fares on the basis of the distance travelled were struck out 1 t>X the council*
