MARKET CONDITIONS SLOW
Conditions were slow on tho Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, only four transactions being completed. A noticeable featuro was tho concerted improvement in levels in the banks group.
Buyers again operated sparingly for Government securities and further supplies are now becoming available. Principal changes were in 1938 per cent bonds, which were quoted 5s lower at £96 15s, and 1937 SJ,- per cent September stock, for which sellers reduced by 2s 6d to £IOO 2s 6d. However, buyers were not interested in these issues. A parcel of 1937 5i per cent February stock was taken unchanged at £IOO. In banks New Zealands changed hands 5d higher at 46s and offers and quotations were 3d higher at 45s 9d and 46s respectively. For Unions buyers advanced their limits by Is to £7 15s, but this was accompanied by an advance in quotations of 2s to £B. Buyers indicated willingness to pay 2s 6d more at £9 10s for Australasias when a seller appeared at £lO 2s 6d.
Restricted bidding for insurance issues was on a generally unchanged basis. However, support for South British weakened slightly, offers being 6d lower at 55s 6d, with quotations unchanged at 56s 6d.
Movements in tho other sections were mostly of a one-sided nature and no active bidding resulted. New Zealand Breweries were available 3d lower at 26s 6d, attracting an offer at 265. r Lhero was an increase of 3d to 32s in quotations for British Tobaccos, which were sought unchanged at 30s 6d. For Colonial Sugars, oilers were advanced by 5s to £45 ss, and Henry Jones Co-op. were sought 6d higher at 345. In the absence of offers, Wilson's Cements were quoted 3d higher at 32s 6d. In mining a sale of Alexanders at 22s 6d established an advance of over 3s in three weeks. There was a slight shading in quotations at 23s 6d, offers being Is higher at 22s 6d. Levels in Blackwaters, which were sought at 20s and were available at 21s 3d, revealed similar movements. Offers for Waihis, which were quoted 2d higher at 19s, were Id lower at 18s 7d. Quotations for Mt. Lyells were reduced by 3d to 20s 9d and buyers advanced in stages by 9d to 20s 3d.
