TRANSPORT REGULATIONS

COUNTRY GOODS SERVICES

MANUKAU COUNTY OPINIONS

Resolutions in connection with the proposed regulation of goods services under .the Transport Licensing Act, 1931, were passed'at a special meeting of the Manukau County Council on Friday. The council expressed the opinion that there was a grave danger of creating the railways as railhead service points to areas which would be more economically serviced by road transport, taking into consideration the additional handling of goods and detriment to stock if taken by rail to the districts concerned, and the amount of money already invested by ratepayers in roads winch had been constructed primarily with the object of giving cheaper road transport to their properties.

Attention was also drawn to the financial loss to farmers which would be occasioned by the elimination of competitive prices /from owners of goods service vehicles owing to the proposed fixing of charges by licensing authorities. It was ''decided to forward the views of the council to the Minister of Transport with a request that he should give tnem liis careful consideration, the suggestions being made primarily with the object of preventing any increase in the cost of transport, to the primary producer, particularly those not adequately serviced by the railway.
